The First Book to Teach Children about MEMS and Nanotechnology

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., (BUSINESSEWIRE), February 26, 2008 – Research and Markets today announced the addition of “MEMS & Nanotechnology for Kids” to their offering.

A basic introduction to MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) and nanotechnology, this 32-page book explores what we can find at the micro- and nano-scale, and then takes a look at various MEMS devices and nanomaterials. Products discussed include accelerometers, gyro sensors, pressure sensors, ink jet nozzles, optical MEMS, Lab-on-a-Chip, aerogels, carbon nanotubes, dendrimers, fullerenes, nanoclay, nanofibers, nanoparticles and nanowhiskers.

Readers will learn how MEMS devices work, what makes nanomaterials special, and why they're useful in all kinds of products kids are familiar with, such as bikes and video games. MEMS & Nanotechnology for Kids was written for students ages 11-14 to inspire interest in science and engineering, although younger children and adults alike may also benefit from the easy-to-read explanations. The hardcover book is beautifully illustrated with nearly 80 full-color photographs that are visually powerful.

Some of the companies and organizations that provided images include: Agilent Technologies, California Institute of Technology, Cornell University, DENSO Corporation, Georgia Institute of Technlogy, Institute of High Pressure Physics (Unipress), NASA/JPL, Nintendo, Research Center Karlsruhe, Sandia National Laboratory, Segway Inc., STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Chicago.
